The Topeka
Gospel
Church – A Brief
Description
In the fall of 1982 three homemakers got together for Bible studies
and soon more people became interested in it.
A year later they organized as a family Bible study group and called
itself Topeka Chinese Bible Study Group.
The number of participants continued to grow and by the summer of
1994 it became impossible to have a study session in individual’s home. In
October of that year the group accepted an invitation to have its studies in
Southern Hills Mennonite Church.
At the same time a meeting was held to form a governing board of
directors and to make preparation for incorporation.
In early 1996 the board of directors adopted the name, the Topeka
Gospel Church (TGC), and initiated a formal application process through
Kansas Secretary of State Office.
On
March 1, 1996 the Topeka
Gospel
Church was
duly incorporated and
constituted as a New Testament Church.
And since early July of 2003, it has become
a cooperating member
of the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists and the Kaw Valley
Association of Southern Baptists.
The vision of our church is to build a Biblical Christian church
targeting on the people with Chinese culture, background and interest in the
Topeka area. And the purpose of our
church is to glorify God, to be the likeness of Jesus Christ, and to
fellowship with the Holy Spirit through worship, evangelism, bible study,
discipleship, missions, and community services.
We affirm the Holy Bible as the inspired Word of God and the basis of
our beliefs. And we adopt the
doctrinal statement of "The Baptist Faith and Message" of the Southern
Baptist Convention as the principles of our faith. We voluntarily band
ourselves together as a body of baptized believers in Jesus Christ. Having
received the salvation of Jesus Christ personally, we commit ourselves to
sharing the good news of salvation to all mankind. The ordinances of the
church are believer's baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Since its establishment the TGC had conducted the Sunday Worship Service and
other functions at Covenant Baptist Church, located at 5440 SW 37th St. till
April, 2008. Due to space constraint, the TGC accepted an offer from the
Topeka Bible Church and moved to 1135 SW College Avenue and had the first
Sunday Worship on May 4 of that year. In Nov 2022, TGC moved to the current
location at 3501 SW Wanamaker Road Room D 13, inside the Wanamaker Woods
Church of the Nazarene. Afterwards, TGC left the Southern Baptist
Associations in December 2023.
The language used in our church is Mandarin Chinese with English translation
if it is necessary. When a guest speaker speaks English, then a Chinese
interpreter is provided.
